idea of “dance” in the human world. Even you can become an
outstanding canine freestyle handler once you understand team

to move in a manner that will compliment your dog, drawing the

"Canine Freestyle is a choreographed performance organized with music, illustrating the
training and joyful relationship of a dog and handler team. Freestyle is an excellent
discipline to illustrate the conformation and movement of the dog. The reach, drive and
beauty of an athletic, trained dog moving to music can take one’s breath away."

Canine Freestyle for Therapy Dog Teams
Canine freestyle is a GREAT idea for those who are part of organizations such as Lend-a-Heart or the Delta Society, as
visitation or animal-assisted therapy teams. It gives you something new and extremely entertaining to offer. Turn up the volume
on your iPod, or pull out that little boom box, and entertain for two minutes or twenty seconds - in single rooms, in a group
gathering, or even in the hallway! Patients and their families will love this, and the care staff will too! It will definitely bring out the
smiles!
What’s more, you can do this as a single team - just you and your dog - or create a group routine with two or three of your fellow
therapy teams. Group routines are a little like synchronized swimming, and they never fail to wow an audience.
How to get started? Marcia Barkley of Music Plus Dogs! presents this class series designed specifically for therapy dog teams.
At the end of the classes, you’ll have created a routine specific to you and your dog or for your group.
Pre-requisite: Dogs must be able and willing to walk nicely at the handler’s side in the classroom. Please use a relatively short
leash (4’ is recommended), and appropriate rewards to make this a very positive experience for your dog. Bring water for
yourself and your dog.
